Outside Lands Music Festival takes place in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California. The Music Festival was first held in late August, 2008, and was a huge success with attendance reaching as high as 60,000 per day in the festivals opening year. Since 2008 Outside Lands has been held annually over the weekend between the 3rd and 4th week of August.
The Music Festival derives it’s name after the location of the event in Golden Gate Park. In the early days of the city of San Francisco, the area which is now Golden Gate Park used to be referred to as the ‘Outside Lands’ due to its relatively remote location when the city was much smaller than it is today. Several decades of development later and the ‘Outside Lands’ were engulfed by the expanding city of San Francisco and converted into the cities central park, which has now been renamed ‘Golden Gate Park’ where the Outside Lands Music Festival is now held.
