iHeartRadio Music Festival
biggest live music event in radio history
iHeartRadio is a smartphone application that was born out of the slow demise of traditional tuner AM/FM radio. The application rebroadcasts radio stations through 3G/4G devices, and allows users to listen to participating radio stations from across the world. It has been seen as the savior of many radio stations, who were able to boost their listener numbers through the apps syndication.
iHeartRadio was created by the umbrella corporation: Clear Channel Communications, who also own the majority of US based terrestrial FM radio stations. Seeing the potential iHeartRadio had in reviving their dying radio station sector, Clear Channel pumped tens of millions into advertising the new format, with its focal event concentrating around the iHeartRadio Music Festival. Like most of Clear Channels radio stations, the music festival featured only ultra mainstream pop, pop-rock, and ‘hip-pop’ acts. Clear Channel labeled it with the slogan of: “biggest live music event in radio history.” It may be the largest in ‘radio’ history, but certainly is not the largest live music event ever…
The iHeartRadio music festival was first held in 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and hosted performances by The Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jane’s Addiction, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Steven Tyler, Jeff Beck, Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez,Usher, Lady Gaga, and Sting. The festival was a huge marketing success for the Clear Channel iHeartRadio brand, and has made the smartphone app a staple addition to any traditional radio lovers arsenal of musical choices. The music festival is essentially just another ‘MTV music awards’ type lineup of artists and performances. Love Pop? This festival was created just you.
